{"id":2614,"date":"2016-03-25T13:08:34","date_gmt":"2016-03-25T12:08:34","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/kaboum.fr\/wondercatpainting\/?p=2614"},"modified":"2016-03-25T13:08:34","modified_gmt":"2016-03-25T12:08:34","slug":"monochrome-kingdom-death","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/kaboum.fr\/wondercatpainting\/2016\/03\/monochrome-kingdom-death\/","title":{"rendered":"Monochrome Kingdom Death"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Since this is a question we get a lot, I thought I&#8217;d put together a few guidelines as to how we achieved our <a title=\"Kingdom Death: Monster\" href=\"https:\/\/kaboum.fr\/wondercatpainting\/2015\/11\/kingdom-death-monster\/\" target=\"_blank\">monochrome version of Kingdom Death<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>We didn&#8217;t took pictures step by step but the process is easy enough to understand.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">It involved an airbrush for the first steps. I don&#8217;t have the exact names of all paints (Games Workshop kinda\u00a0lost me anyway when they changed the names of the Citadel range) but it doesn&#8217;t matter, it&#8217;s the hue that is important. The airbrush paint were from the Minitaire paint range. The regular paints are from Citadel (Games Workshop).<\/span><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><strong><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Basic steps :<\/span><\/strong><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">&#8211; priming black<\/span><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">&#8211; airbrushing with dark brown, maybe from a 45-60\u00b0 angle (it should not cover the black in the deep shadows but still show on SOME shadows)<\/span><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">&#8211; airbrushing a mix of grey and lilac from the opposite direction of the lantern (the lilac will be a nice warm\/cold contrast with the orange lights)<\/span><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">&#8211; airbrushing orange from the lantern<\/span><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">&#8211; airbrushing a TINY TINY little bit of yellow within the orange<\/span><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">At this point it looked like this :<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-2615 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/kaboum.fr\/wondercatpainting\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/KD-NB-Light.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"855\" height=\"642\" srcset=\"https:\/\/kaboum.fr\/wondercatpainting\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/KD-NB-Light.jpg 855w, https:\/\/kaboum.fr\/wondercatpainting\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/KD-NB-Light-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/kaboum.fr\/wondercatpainting\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/KD-NB-Light-600x450.jpg 600w, https:\/\/kaboum.fr\/wondercatpainting\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/KD-NB-Light-199x150.jpg 199w, https:\/\/kaboum.fr\/wondercatpainting\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/KD-NB-Light-150x112.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 855px) 100vw, 855px\" \/><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">Then obviously there&#8217;s a fair amount of regular\u00a0brush work involved.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The airbrush is fine for a rough start but there&#8217;s much to be refined after that.<\/p>\n<p>Shadows have been made deeper and visible on the upper parts, lots of highlights to do to give definition to the muscles, clothes.<\/p>\n<p>The lights have been reworked : the airbrush allows to have the major halo done but it&#8217;s a limited process. You don&#8217;t want to mess up your model airbrushing too much orange on it so once we had a correct halo we stopped here and finished the light with the brush. For example <a href=\"https:\/\/kaboum.fr\/wondercatpainting\/wp-content\/gallery\/kingdom-death-monster\/Kingdom-Death-Survivors-Lucy-02.jpg\">Lucy&#8217;s hair<\/a> had practically no light on them, so we painted it. Lights have been highlighted in yellow\u00a0in the brightest spots. On some miniatures it hardly shows at all, on some it still adds some variation to the general hue. It&#8217;s a way to break slightly the black &amp; white and give some depth to it, but I guess the result would be very similar without ! This can be achieved very easily with a black and a white primer, and a simple zenithal spray of white above the black.
